Chinese fish contaminated with toxin: CFIA
Canwest News Service January 10, 2009
OTTAWA -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to eat a specific brand of frozen leatherjacket fish after two people reported being sick.
In the warning issued early Saturday, the agency says that leatherjacket fish sold under the School of Fish brand may be contaminated with Ciguatera toxin, which can cause Ciguatera poisoning.
The recall affects frozen leatherjacket fish from China sold in packages with the production code of H104 and UPC codes of 8 74718 00074 0 or 8 74718 00073 3.
The fish importer, Frosbisher International Enterprise Ltd., based in Delta, B.C., is also participating in the recall.
The agency says that foods tainted with Ciguatera toxin do not look or smell spoiled. The marine biotoxin can also survive hot temperatures and is not destroyed by cooking.
Those who exhibit signs of Ciguatera poisoning such as vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, itchy skin, and hot and cold inversion where hot things feel cold and vice versa, should contact their doctor immediately.
